Why Pinzón is an odd and interesting place to spend a day
Pinzón is one of conservation's genuine comeback stories. Black rats reached the island with shipping and ate every tortoise hatchling for over a century, which left an ageing adult population and no young at all. The rats were eradicated in 2012. Since then, more than 1,000 juvenile Pinzón tortoises have been repatriated, and hatchlings born on the island now survive without help.
Across the whole archipelago roughly 20,000 to 25,000 giant tortoises remain, a fraction of the historical population but climbing. The rewilding programme behind that recovery is the same work that put 158 Floreana-lineage juveniles back on Floreana in February 2026, the first there in over 180 years.
